Smart Kids – The Company

Our roots

In 1993, New Zealand school teacher Sue Milne felt that there weren’t enough practical, multi-sensory resources available to engage children and really encourage them to learn.  Having also worked with children who were dyslexic, she felt that she could devise some fun reading games that would work well for all children, regardless of ability.  From the garage, Smart Kids was born!

Five years later in 1998, Smart Kids opened up their UK office in Hungerford, West Berkshire.  Duncan Milne, Sue’s son, has run the business for the past 5 years having completed his PhD in Education and Psychology.

Today

Smart Kids is still a family owned company. The UK is the biggest market and Duncan now heads up all new product development.  Phonics is an area of particular expertise but we now also have ranges for language, literacy, maths, numeracy, EAL, and PSHE. Our resources are suitable for use with children aged 4-11 years and older children with special needs.

Our Philosophy

We believe that products need to stimulate children’s imaginations, engage them in active problem solving and allow them to work independently or co-operatively. Above all we believe that learning should be fun!

To that end we set ourselves high standards for product development. Our educationalists are well trained, we work closely with teachers and our products are thoroughly tried, tested and enjoyed.

Our Service

We like to think our service is second to none, but were glad to have it independently verified too!  In March 2007 we were proud to win Supplier of the Year for the second year running at the Education Resource Awards.  If you haven’t tried us yet, please do – we’re committed to maintaining and improving our service and would welcome your feedback on how we do.
